Our Story
Old Rivers Organic Company has been part of the Qu’Appelle Valley for more than a century. Established in the 1890s, when this land was still part of the Northwest Territories, the farm has witnessed generations of prairie families live and work according to the rhythms of the seasons. Over the decades, it has grown from a small homestead into a respected part of the regional landscape, a place where history and hard work have shaped both the land and the people who cared for it.
In 2006, our family took over stewardship of Old Rivers and began restoring the land through healthier, more sustainable practices. What had long operated as a conventional farm was gradually transitioned to organic methods, and in 2009, the property became fully certified organic. That certification has been maintained ever since. For us, this shift was not only about how we grow but about honouring the land itself. Bordering Dakota Nation lands, the farm has always existed as part of a shared prairie landscape shaped by respect, understanding, and a commitment to caring for what the land provides.
Our Story
Preserving the spirit and character of the farm has always been at the heart of what we do. Our yard still features its original 1929 Chicago windmill, weathered wooden barns, and classic machinery, all of which stand as reminders of the people who built this place. These pieces of history are more than decoration. They represent the endurance of prairie life and the ingenuity that made it possible. We have maintained these structures and artifacts not only as symbols of the past but as working elements of a living, evolving farm.
From our ridge overlooking Echo Valley Provincial Park, the land stretches toward Pasqua and Echo Lakes, surrounded by rolling fields, native prairie grasses, and wildlife that call this place home. Conservation and organic farming go hand in hand here. Every decision we make, from crop rotation to soil care, is guided by a respect for nature and an understanding that the health of the land sustains everything else. Old Rivers remains a living reflection of prairie heritage, where history, conservation, and community come together in one remarkable landscape.
At Old Rivers Organic Farm, conservation is a core part of everything we do. We focus on protecting natural habitats, supporting local wildlife, and maintaining a healthy, chemical-free ecosystem that benefits both the farm and the surrounding environment.
Rescue Animals on the Farm – All our animals are rescues and receive excellent care. Cats, dogs, and horses help maintain the farm’s health, with cats keeping rodents away from grain bins and buildings.
Wildlife-Friendly Lands – Deer, badgers, rabbits, foxes, coyotes, and porcupines inhabit the nearby hills, while wild birds feed on residual grain stubble during migration.
No Hunting Allowed – We protect all animals on the property; hunting is not permitted on the ground, in the air, or in the fields.
Preserved Habitats – Trees, forested areas, and wetlands remain intact to provide shelter and breeding grounds for birds and other wildlife.
Chemical-Free Soil – The soil is kept healthy naturally through undercrop rotation with clover, peas, alfalfa, and weeds, without using fertilizers or chemicals.
